UPDATE: Military District of Frosinone – Indexing project – Foglio Matricolare

Il Portale – the website of the Italian Beneculturali which is publishing civil records from all over Italy – yesterday published the information that the digitization of the registers of the ‘Ruoli matricolare’ for the military district of Frosinone was still in progress but that 106,000 records were already accessible. They are still working on  1881-1883 and 1885-1887.

Angel Research has been following the digitization project with interest and mentioned this indexing project in a recent post Finding Foglio Matricolare.

This is a great resource for those who are searching for an ancestor and not 100% sure of the town of birth, or parents names.

To search the index you will need to download the pdf file for the year(s) you need to search.  It cannot be searched while on line.

But let’s be clear about what they have done.

They have taken the ‘Foglio Matricolare’ that they have in storage and entered the relevant information into a searchable database.  This does not include information on those males who were exempted from military service.

For the Archivio di Stato in Frosinone it should be noted that some of the Foglio matricolare for their military district were sent to the Archivio di Stato in Latina and vice versa.  These persons may be found in the Lista di Leva but not in this new list created from the Foglio matricolare actually on site in Frosinone.

It’s a great resource but remember you will still have to request a copy of the actual military record from the Archivio di Stato di Frosinone. Do include all the information found on the digitized list in your request.    Once they have found the record you will be asked by email to forward a small fee by ‘vaglia postale’ (a cheque from the post office in Italy).

I am unclear how this works from outside Italy since the Archivio di Stato does not even have its own bank account that can receive your money.  You could try sending cash but make sure it is Euro.  The problem for them is that if you send paper money they have to figure out a way to send you change.

Many people request copies of records then abandon the project due to the difficulties of sending the money.  This is time-consuming for the archive staff especially when they have your information on hold for months at a time waiting to see if you will send the money.

As a cooperative effort with the Archivio di Stato di Frosinone,   Angel research and Genealogical Services have arranged to act as go between so you can receive these copies as easily and quickly as possible.

For each scan forwarded by email                            50 Euro includes archive fees

For a printed, certified copy sent by post                 75 Euro includes archive fees and mailing costs

Our fees are payable via Paypal, please contact us for details.

  1. Are the Lista di Leva for Frosinone available to search? I’ve found 2 of my grandfather’s brothers in the military roles, but not him or another brother, who both left Italy before they were 21.

The Lista di Leva aren’t available to search on-line but they are just a list, name, date and place of birth and father’s name. It is really only useful if you want to know an exact date of birth, or, in the case of Frosinone, if they served in the military and the Foglio Matricolare IS NOT held in the State Archives of Frosinone but is stored elsewhere.
